What Your Bra Size Doesn't Tell You
Your size is where you start. Shape, style and brand decide where you finish.
Shop BrasYou know your size. You've tried a bra in that size. And it still doesn't feel right. That's not you, and it's not a mistake. A bra size is a starting point, and it can't tell you everything about how a bra will fit. Here's what the number leaves out, and how to find the bra that suits you.
A Size Is Two Measurements, Not One
A bra size has two parts: the band (the number) and the cup (the letter). They work together. A cup letter on its own doesn't mean a set size, because the cup gets bigger as the band does. A 14D and a 10D hold different amounts, and they're the same letter.
The band does most of the work, so it's the best place to start. It should sit level and snug all the way round.
What the Number Leaves Out
- Shape — whether you're fuller at the top or the bottom, wider or narrower, changes which cups sit well on you.
- Style — a plunge, a balconette and a full cup are cut differently, so the same size can fit differently in each.
- Brand — every brand has its own shape and pattern, so your size can feel a little different from one to the next.
- Straps, wires and band — the details that decide whether a bra feels comfortable by the end of the day.
Why Style Matters
If a bra in your size gapes at the top or spills at the sides, the cup shape may be the issue, not the size. Trying a different style in the same size is often the quickest fix.
Style Pick: Balconette
Freya Fascinate Balconette Bra
A balconette neckline with mid coverage wire, designed to give a rounded uplift. The cups are fully lined for shape and support, and the straps are fixed and fully adjustable to prevent slipping.
Style Pick: Smoothing Underwire
Wacoal Back Appeal Classic Underwire Bra
Supportive cups with a hidden sling for added support, and a microthin spacer fabric band designed to minimise back and side bulge. It's a back and side smoothing underwire bra, with fully adjustable straps.
Brand to Brand, Your Size Can Shift
Don't be surprised if your size isn't identical in every brand you try. Each brand cuts its bras a little differently, so you might be a different size in one brand than in another. It doesn't mean something is wrong. It means the brand's shape is a better or worse match for yours.
Check the Fit, Not Just the Label
Whatever the label says, here's how to tell if a bra is right for you:
- The band sits level — snug all the way round, not riding up your back.
- The wire sits flat on your ribs — not on your breast tissue.
- Your breasts sit fully inside the cups — no gaping at the top, no spilling at the top or sides.
- The straps stay put — they shouldn't dig in, because the band does most of the work.
If the cups look wrong, check the band first. A band that rides up can make the cups look wrong too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my bra size feel different in different brands?
Every brand cuts its bras a little differently, so the same size can fit differently from one brand to the next. Use your size as a starting point, then check the fit.
What is a sister size?
A sister size is a different band and cup combination that holds a similar cup volume. For example, 14D, 16C and 12DD are sister sizes. If the band feels too loose or too tight, trying a sister size can help.
My bra fits in one style but not another. Why?
Plunge, balconette and full cup styles are cut differently, so they sit differently on your shape. If one style doesn't work in your size, try another before changing your size.
How do I know if my cups are too big or too small?
If the cups gape at the top, they may be too big. If you spill over the top or sides, they may be too small. Check the band first, as a band that rides up can make the cups look wrong too.
